Skopje Biennial 2009 Visual Identity and Branding

Skopje Biennial 2009
Visual Identity Design
From 3 rd to 12 th Sept. 2009, Skopje hosted the XIV Edition of the Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean. It is considered the most important Mediterranean event focused on young creativity, presenting works of artists 18 - 30 years old from a variety of creative fields. During the 10-day festival, Skopje hosted more than 700 young artists from 47 countries and their creations were exhibited in the public spaces of the city.
The concept of Biennial’s visual and logo reflects its theme “Seven gates”. The symbol is an original interpretation of the old legend for seven roads leading to and from Skopje, very similar to the seven perceptions and vital accesses to and from the head of human being: eyes, nose, mouth, ears. These “gates” of creativity are represented through the arches of the well known Stone Bridge, the landmark of Skopje. The seven heads are associated with the creative potential of human beings. The human figures represent artists from seven Biennial’s disciplines: Visual Arts, Applied Arts, Show, Literature, Music, Gastronomy and Images on the Move. The vivid colors with transparency are chosen to symbolize youth, diversity, openness and fluidity. The visual identity was used to promote the event all around Europe and served as a platform for all visual communication means produced for the needs of this massive art event.
